Continued, in Jen's Words...

The horses' enthusiasm had a profound effect on my motivation and creativity. After work I would spend my evenings rummaging through my fridge with one hand pulling out whatever produce was in there and obsessively Googling nutritional profiles and whether or not the item was safe for horses with the other. I then began comparing different types of flours, oats, seeds and other things that could be used as fillers and binding agents that would also pack more nutrients but still make it a treat. You see, when I first decided to make my own treats, I just looked up a basic recipe online and built off of that. Most of them called for some mixture of molasses, sweet feed, rolled oats & flour, but having recently completed the Certified Personal Trainer program that spring, I was already in the habit of finding healthier alternatives. I explain more about the ingredients in the Our Ingredients section.

Once I had more or less landed on the base ingredients, then came experimenting with all the different flavors! Apple~Carrot~Ginger was pretty easy, but the next one really changed the game! The Blueberry~Maple~Yam flavor, also the base for the Blueberry Woofles, was a huge hit and it was at that time that I noticed our dogs eating the treats and enjoying them as much as the horses. So I said to myself "Well, I guess I make dog treats now too!" I made sure to cross reference all of the ingredients to make sure they were safe. Although they were all cleared, I still adjusted a couple of things to make them more compatible with dogs.

So this brings us to the end of the season at the ranch and although I loved making treats, my plan was to utilize my education and start a website that offered my personal training services. I still planned to make treats, but that was not to be my main focus. Until...

It was a conversation with my dad that changed my mind and started me on this totally wild experience! I was on the phone with him to tell him about my plans for my personal training and the website I was having built when he said, "That's really great about your training and such, but I don't know..." he paused for a moment then said "I think you really got a sleeping giant with these horse treats!" You see, I have a great deal of respect for my dad and he was a very good business man. More importantly, he has never been one to give blind support or put his stamp of approval on just anything unless he has a lot of faith in something. Although there were other signs and events that took place that steered me toward this endeavor, my dad was and still is an endless well of support and guidance.

Thank you for your time and please continue to check back as I continue to update the site!
